Devlog June 2023

Hi guys! Would you believe me if I said I took a 1 week break for gamedev and forgot to make this devlog at the end of June? Yeah, I wouldn't believe me either. Anyways.

At the end of June I finally implemented the last parts of the game. It should be fully playable from start to finish. Some sprites, animation, music and sfx are still missing though. So I'll start working right away on those.

What I've worked on in June

  • Implemented and balanced two battle
    • Polished the segway before an optional boss battle
    • Added 4 new moves for optional boss
    • Added 2 frames of animation
    • Polished segway before story boss battle
    • Added event after optional boss battle
  • Polished two room backgrounds
  • Added story event
    • Wrote script
    • Implemented said script
    • Added camera movements
    • Added 2 more scripts regarding this event I cant say more even though I want to
  • Modified some sprites from a sidequest
  • Added text for when Mac learns new abilities (by finding items most of the time)
  • Credits scene
    • Compiled list of everyone that helped
    • Added Music section
    • Added SFX section
    • Added Donations section
    • Added Special thanks section
    • Made two small illustrations for people who donated 5$ or more
  • Implemented two cutscenes
    • Wrote the cutscenes
    • Added 9 illustrations
  • Fixed weird bug that gave you access to test moves???? how did that happen (I know how but it was weird)
  • Finished Final scene of the game
    • Added 12 frames of animation
    • Added 6 portraits
    • Implemented the scene (it took like 950 lines of code, it was a lot)
  • Added new way to farm an item
  • Added 2 icons for battle moves
  • Added collision to a room that didn't had collision
    • epic
  • Refactored particle system for overworld
  • Fixed some battle moves for enemies in the deepway
    • I don't remember doing this but its in my notes so yeah

What's left?

Polish polish polish. During the next months I'm going to work on adding animations to the battle moves that don't have them, add music where it's necessary, add sfx where they are missing, and redo stuff that feels incomplete. That's very ambiguous but I don't quite know how much work it is.

This is the part of game development where I start working with testers to see what parts work well and what needs to be improved. I'll also try to use this time to work on accessibility settings like remapable controls and quality of life settings. If I have some time left I want to add small details like a victory screen, funny dialogs and collabs maybe.

Now the game is a 2/5 in my eyes. I want to take it all the way up to a 4/5 before launch.

And that's it! See you again at the end of this month!
