Devlog July 2023

Hi everyone, welcome to the first second devlog after my break. This month I've been playtesting the game thoroughly and fixing many many bugs. I decided to take it easy this month and not work on new features. It's been very refreshing doing that.

Now lets talk about...

What I've worked on in July

  • Made a custom error page that shows more info about the game.
  • Polished bounding box for a room
  • Adjusted the stairs interaction hitbox in the first floor of the old shack
  • Made dialog more clear by flipping portraits
  • Made small timing improvements to many scripts
  • Corrected typos
  • Adjusted hitboxes of some NPC's
  • Fixed a bug where the camera would go out of bounds in fullscreen
  • Added music to a room that had no music
  • Now when you maintain a directional key in the Title and Pause menu the input repeats after a short while (cool for sound adjusting stuff)
  • Made mini boss battle theme
  • Adjusted some camera boundaries in some rooms
  • Fixed a sprite which had the wrong shade of grass
  • Fixed some warps that left you in slightly incorrect positions
  • Made and implemented new sfx for an npc (I'm starting to like sound design)
  • Made an animation for one of Mac's battle moves
  • Made an animation for one of Amber's battle moves
  • Spent too much time making a new NPC, her name is Ember and I love her
  • Fixed some battle mechanics for the final boss (can't say what they are for obvious reasons)
  • Fixed a bug where particle effects didnt spawn in the correct positions in full screen
  • Added 3 new icons for battle moves
  • Remade one of the sprites from mac's overworld sprite sheet
  • Fixed mistakes in some of amber's portraits
  • Implemented a new cool feature where you can say yes or no during an overworld event and that triggers different dialog options
    • more types of dialog trees are possible now thanks to this
  • Fixed a bug where an enemy didn't return to its idle animation after its turn in battle
  • Implemented new overworld UI so I can show big images during dialogs
  • Renamed "Naranjarinas" to "Naranjinas" because its easier to say
    • also replaced all instances of "Naranjarina" in the game
  • Added a text to all overworld scripts where you learn a new battle move that says so
  • Fixed a bug where the music didn't play when you selected "Continue"
  • Fixed a bug where you didn't learn any new moves during the game
  • Fixed a bug where a specific item didn't stack in the inventory
  • Playtested the game twice
  • Polished some backgrounds
  • Fixed a bug where some encounters didn't play the corresponding battle music
  • Made some balancing for the battle moves
  • Removed a shader in a secret area in the demo
  • Fixed a bug where interacting with the deep way crashed the game
  • Fixed a bug that crashed the game when you pick up a pebble
  • Fixed bug where a shortcut would "wrong warp" you out of bounds

What's left?

Around 33 things, at least that is what my trello board says (not counting ideas). During august I'll start testing the game with my friends and see how it goes. For that this next week I have to balance some battles that were not working properly and add as many quality of life improvements as I can.

That's pretty much it. I'm also moving out from twitter, I'm trying out other social media to hopefuly find a new place to share the game. If you have any ideas let my know! For now you can follow me on instagram and cohost.

see you next month!
